I performed the first private bronchial thermoplasty case in Melbourne on Monday. This is a breakthrough new treatment for sufferers of severe asthma.

Oventus Device for Sleep Apnoea

This is another mandibular advancement splint device. It may be an option for those with poor CPAP tolerance, or difficulties with other MAS devices, because of nasal obstruction.

Pirfenidone Improves Mortality in IPF

Esbriet has finally been introduced onto the PBS for patients with IPF.

Breakthrough in Asthma Treatment

There was new research released this week that offers additional treatment options to asthma sufferers who experience frequent flare-ups:

Pulmonary Fibrosis Treatment

With the advent of PBS subsidised treatment for IPF (idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis), now that Nintedanib is available, it will be of increasing importance to be able to achieve adequate diagnostic tissue specimens for patients with possible disease. When the radiology (CT scan) is not entirely consistent with IPF, but the lung doctor is still concerned about this possibility, then lung biopsy is required. Now that we have Cryobiopsy, we can often achieve this as a day procedure, without the need for painful and costly surgery.

The Importance of Accurate Lung Cancer Diagnosis

In this day and age of personalised medicine, it is vitally important that adequate samples are achieved from suspicious lung lesions, in order that specialised genetic testing can be performed. The larger and more well preserved the biopsies, the better the information. Cryobiopsy allows exactly this. Nick is currently the only respiratory physician in Melbourne to offer this service in the private hospital setting.

It's not normal to be tired all the time...

Did you know that it's not normal to always feel tired, run down, or have trouble concentrating. If you're not waking up refreshed in the morning, no matter how much sleep you get, then you may need a sleep study.
